Shooting people...

[profile] quixote317 has recently posted a question on our local list to find out what he'd need to do to get battle ready so he can shoot people at Quad War. I too would like to shoot people at future Quads. Now there's a reason I'm not a heavy fighter... one blow in the wrong spots & I'd be out of commission very easily due to an uncooperative spine. I don't want to start a whole new discussion because I'm sure it's been talked to death, all I want to know are the FACTS... what exactly happened with regard to light fighters... was it a "you shalt not have lights" (yes pun intended)?... did they give a reason?... if I decided to go into battle & yield before anyone hit me, is that a realistic thing to consider or am I likely to get hit by mistake?... what would I need to do to be allowed on the field?

I know that to those of you not in the SCA this post was all in greek! ;)

Bridle

I am well chuffed (Canadian translation = very pleased) to see my hackamore bridle being used for the Riderless Horse ceremony at Crown... saw pictures of it in Tuck's collection... have saved a couple to my SCA album on Facebook :)

Anyone else see any more pictures please let me know :)

Beltaine

So it's been nearly a week since the event & I realized I've not written anything about it! It was one of the best events I've been to in a while... & yes I know that may come as a surprise to some of you but the unpleasant incidences that occurred couldn't spoil all the good things.

Firstly I didn't do the shoot because the night before, which was when I made the decision, I was in a foul mood & figured putting a weapon in my hands was probably a bad idea. It also coloured my choice of garb... rather than something pretty for the feast I figured I'd just wear my utilitarian green cotton dress the whole day.

While looking through the merchants wares I was surprised to see a gown in my size, this particular merchant tends to make things for the larger ladies & I often sigh over the beautiful stuff she makes because I know it wont fit me. So gown in hand I headed to the washroom to try it on. Despite the merchants worry that it might need a zip (yes very period) in the side to get it over my shoulders, I was able to shimmy my way into it. It could have been made for me... perfect fit with a little "wiggle room" for those really big feasts! I then was able to find jewelry to match at another merchant, which along with my rosary that m'lord picked up from home, meant I has a whole new ensemble for the evening. Woo hoo!

Why is this of significance? Because I was called up in court to receive my Award of Arms (i was made a "Lady" for you non SCAdians) & it meant I was wearing pretty when I knelt in front of everyone! ;) (ok so I'm a little vain!) Unfortunately I was in the foyer while Princess
[profile] justgemma17 said nice things about me... I'd gone out there because someone wanted to return some Gold Key (loaner clothing) & I got talking horses with Robert of Clan Gunn & Phoenix... & as anyone who knows me, talk of horses can keep me busy for a very long time whilst keeping me oblivious to all else! The scroll I was given was gorgeous... I wish I had that much skill with pen & brush! I also received a dangly (necklace) made by the Princess' own hand... she even got my favourite colours (ok who's been talking?!) It meant a lot (we're talking *huge* here) to receive it from  [profile] justgemma17  and  [profile] bork107 rather than a Prince & Princess I don't know very well. :) So now I am offically Lady Myfanwy Glanmorfa! :)

I didn't realize until I saw pictures of the event afterwards that Dauphina del lago also received her AOA... we also received our Rose Petal awards the same day (Dragon Soaker)... so now we are sister Ladies as well as sisters of the Rose Petal... which I think is cool... & so does she! :)

Fake it 'til you make it?

Recently in a meme when asked what he envied me for, [profile] quixote317answered "You seem to have a quiet air of confidence around you that makes you very centered." Which floored me & got me thinking...

Why did this surprise me so much? Well the setting that [profile] quixote317sees me in the most is at SCA events which is where I feel the most out of place & least confident.

I am blessed with many friends in the SCA & when in their company I'm perfectly happy & at ease... but there are very few people who I am happy just going up & including myself in their company. I have played the game for a while now but sporadically so I still feel a newbie in many ways. I always feel like they are busy doing something important & I'm intruding. Even people who I socialize with outside the SCA I can still feel awkward around within an SCA setting.

I discovered at the last event that I enjoyed sitting, doing my sewing, out by Gold Key... I was gainfully employed, I had something to keep me from getting bored & people would stop & talk to me as they were going to & from meetings in the Royal Room... but that this suited me isn't really a surprise... I'm an introvert & setting myself in a position when people came to talk to me rather than the other way around completely fits my personality.

I guess I really shouldn't have been all that surprised by the comment... after all I'm a past master at hiding my emotions & have had to teach & do presentations in front of many a group while butterflies are doing a number on my stomach!!

CPO demo

I really wasn't sure about volunteering at the CPO last night but I'm glad I did. The show wasn't what I was expecting but I enjoyed myself... there was much more humour in it, I expected it to be all serious!

What I definitely wasn't expecting was the reaction to us dressed in garb & wondering round in the crowd... yes I expected people to look but when we went up a floor to do a circuit it felt like everyone turned to look at us... it's certainly not something I could have done as easily a few years ago!

I don't know about the others but milord & I had lots of people come up & compliment us on our "costumes"... which was kinda nice seeing as I was wearing the very first garb I ever made... the bi-coloued blue silk noile t-tunic dress I made for Beltaine a fair few years ago now! ;)

Many assumed we were actors from the show (actually nobody in the show was dressed in garb, one of the things that surprised me), others just thought we'd decided to dress like that because we were coming to watch the show (like dressing up to see the Rocky Horror Show?!) & a few stopped us and actually asked! I had one couple who are interested in coming out to play, so I gave them details for Tavern & we'll see if they show up!

*edit*
One thing that was a little odd... there was lots of references to St. George, him being the patron saint of England & the show being about the English fighting the Saxons... So why have the show on St. David's day?... Why not have it on St. Georges day (April 23rd)? It was just a little strange seeing English rather than Welsh flags being waved... *sigh*
