Shooting people...

[profile] quixote317 has recently posted a question on our local list to find out what he'd need to do to get battle ready so he can shoot people at Quad War. I too would like to shoot people at future Quads. Now there's a reason I'm not a heavy fighter... one blow in the wrong spots & I'd be out of commission very easily due to an uncooperative spine. I don't want to start a whole new discussion because I'm sure it's been talked to death, all I want to know are the FACTS... what exactly happened with regard to light fighters... was it a "you shalt not have lights" (yes pun intended)?... did they give a reason?... if I decided to go into battle & yield before anyone hit me, is that a realistic thing to consider or am I likely to get hit by mistake?... what would I need to do to be allowed on the field?

I know that to those of you not in the SCA this post was all in greek! ;)

As you may have gathered from my post on the stables, I really don't know. But that's never stopped me from speculating.

What I heard was that everyone should be armoured on the war field - fighters, marshalls, archers, etc. This is for everyone's safety. In the heat of combat, anyone could be clobbered. Even if nobody hits you, they could fall on you. Also, the other side shoots back!

I've heard rumours of heavies clobbering lights because the heavy in question is an asshole. However, these have always been in vague I heard it happened in this other kingdom ways. I've certainly never heard any of the local heavies doing it. Our local jocks seem to be good at self-policing.

If you would like to get into some kit, we can help you with that. Let me know and I can help with plans. I can also send you a link for a inexpensive and good quality helm.

I too would like this info. I have been playing with the idea of combat archery for a while.

This is pretty much the same reply as I sent James. If you are interested in getting into a kit, we can give you some help building it. I can also send you a link for an inexpensive and good quality helm.

Probably a question better answered over a bunch of beers, but then again perhaps it has been answered over beers before and that is where the confusion/exageration started.

In a nutshell, the Society has minimum armour standards for everyone on the warfield. To cut to the chase, this is actually a good thing compared to the mish-mash of different "standards" depending on whether you were a "light" "heavy" "scout" the Kingdom in which you were playing, yada yada yada. If you wish we can discuss the "covered skin" rule for lights and a plethora of other contradictions.

Track down a copy of the new ABCs, make use of Steinn's knowledge.

Now on to the anecdote time:

Archers getting hit by rattan are very few and far between. There has been one incident at wars I have attended in the last thirteen years of my SCA activity.

There is some risk involved in an SCA "war" If you haven't already done so, watch a couple of wars and get familiar with the "activities"

It is not likely to happen, but can it happen? Well, yes of course it could. If that accidental shot could put you into a wheelchair for the rest of your life then there is only one person who can decide if the "play" is worth the risk.

The Board of Directors chose the only option available to them when they chose the minimum standard.

Some "old-lights" chose to gripe and continue to kvetch at any opportunity.

Like I said talk to Steinn about the armour requirements. I can help with the archery component but to be honest I haven't followed the recent development in missile rules, etc.

I'll look up the latest missile rules and see if there are many changes.
