I took 2 classes at AT War, Beginner Drop Spindle & Scrimshaw.

Using a drop spindle is one of the most basic ways of turning wool/silk/flax/etc. into yarn. I tried 3 different wools... I liked the purple the best:


Scrimshaw involves scratching a design on bone/antler/horn/ivory/etc. & then rubbing ink into the scratches to make them show up... we use bone, I did a buffalo/ox for the boy:

I would be interested in some antler... is it as toxic as bone to work with? Kate said that bone is EVIL... you have to wear a mask & work in an open area while cutting & polishing it otherwise it will KILL you!!

I don't know. I don't recall reading anything about the toxicity of antler though I'm starting to think that anything that causes large amounts of dust or even medium amounts of dust might best be done with an N95 mask on at least if not a cartridge respirator rated for particulates.

Then again perhaps I'll just stick with rock as all the cutting/grinding/sanding is done wet so airborne particles are minimal.
