OK so I'm currently designing my Tudor riding garb & basing it on my device, see above. So the bodice will be blue & the skirt will be green... I'm going to make the "V" in the front of the bodice & skirt white & hoping to put white wavy lines down the sleeves.

I was also thinking of putting a relatively wide (1"-1 1/4") white wavy line at the bottom of the bodice so that it separates the blue & green the same as in my device. My question is... will people think that it looks too much like a white belt & I'll get my wrists slapped?

1) Why would a white belt invite a wrist slapping?

2) What it might resemble, and what it is are two different things. Does that matter?

3) Move the white line up higher, and use it to emphasize your breasts.

1) White belts signify a knighthood. [livejournal.com profile] bork107 (a knight) points out that it's not that much of a problem as long as you're not trying to impersonate a knight.

2) I think it matters. But then, I'm not likely to get my shorts in a knot over someone else's garb. You do hear stories about people blowing all kinds of shit out of proportion in the SCA. I haven't seen it myself though so I expect it's rare.

3) Amen brother.

1) thanks for explaining that.
2) I have had such an incident which is why I asked (see my reply to Bork)
3) that would defeat the whole point of putting the wavy line on... it's supposed to divide the blue & green... geeze... boys & their 1 track minds! ;p

My two cents.

To be quite honest, I have only heard of one member of the chivalry get their knickers in a knot over something like this. The worst problem was that they weren't willing to say something. That becomes their problem.

As for people wearing white around their waists, it comes down to intentions. Your intention is to have nice garb that matches your arms. That isn't a problem. You aren't trying to represent/misrepresent yourself or a peerage.

I would suggest that if someone were ever to approach you, you could say that we had this converstaion. Only once have I had someone come up to me and tell me only knights can wear white belts. However, they were relatively new and had never met me before. Unlike that Gus Jimmison (ask Keith).

So, go forth and make it! Yay you!

Thanks hun!

I'm not even sure it's going to work at this point but I figured I'd ask :)

The reason I ask is that at Dragon Slayer one year I was wearing garb that didn't have a belt that went with it... it wasn't until I went to shoot that I realized that I had nothing to hang my hip quiver from... so I took off the headscarf I was wearing, tied it around my waist & hung my quiver from it until I was done shooting. It didn't even occur to me that it was white until I head mutterings from someone... not someone I knew & no, you're right, they didn't come up to me & say anything.

It should look great and why would anyone decide to have a hissy over it. There are some hugely anal people but not a great many of them local. I was at one event where someone got his knickers in a knot because some guy was wearing a Voyageur belt, basically a tablet woven belt with fringes, that was a bright red. He wasn't trying to look like a squire, just authentic to the rest of his garb but that kind of response is the rare thing here, thank goodness. I am actually glad that we don't have a lot of grief 'cause my new garb will have a white belt, not even vaquely knightish unless a knight is into grapes and pomegranites embroidered on his white belt, but nonetheless white as a base.
