OMG THIS is coming to town!
Can't really afford it but... *sigh*
Anyone else can't afford it but still wants to go?! :D
I went down to the barn to ride last night to find Ariel's eyes all sore, swollen & full of icky white gunge... as far as we could tell she hadn't injured them, it's just the flies irritating them. So I spend an hour pressing a cold cloth against them to try & bring the swelling down... they looked a little better by the time I left.  :(

This last month the flies have been really bad... usually it's mozzies but this year it's been flies... the repellant sprays don't seem to be working either. A week or so ago I couldn't ride her because she had bad bites along her girth line & now this... poor Ariel! :( I hate effing flies!

So [profile] shuffledog I'm afraid I'm not going to get to see you die tonight but I have to go back down & make sure she's not any worse... otherwise it'll be time to call the vet... dread to think what that will cost!

Another note while down the barn... Wendi had Miika & Deja in while I was there... Mikka was finishing up his feed while she was getting Deja ready... all of a sudden we hear Miika go nuts... his front legs are slipping & sliding trying to find purchase on the floor made wet with the food he's spilt... the lead rope is up over his head... we think he managed to get it wrapped around twice rather than the once he usually manages... when he finally sorts himself out, having scared himself shitless, we notice blood dripping from his mouth... upon investigation we find a split lip & a bottom tooth missing... this is the second time he's knocked his teeth out... trouble is I don't think it's baby teeth this time!
1. get Ariel used to the idea of doing strange games (this may prove the most difficult!)
so far I have introduced Ariel to big bright orange cones & has her weave in & out of 3... next step is to practice this until I feel that I can do it 1 handed... Ariel is not western trained but will neck rein to some extent but there's a difference between neck reining during a relaxed cool down with a long rein & doing while collected & balanced in order to make it round the cones... once that's done I'll need to introduce her to the "sword" & let her know it's not a crop that I'm going to hit her with!

need to buy canes & something to make flags out of so we have something to try & hit.

2. see if [profile] neavecanadahas a horse she wants to/can take
unfortunately the horse she was hoping to take can't go but Robert came to the rescue & said it was possible that she could ride one of his. :)

3. see what we have in the way of transportation for our equine friends
have a trailer I can borrow providing it's not sold by then (need to form a back-up plan) so need to source a truck & hitch next.

4. make sure everyone who wants to ride has videos taken of them so we can send them off for authorization
have camera, just need to take the videos as soon as the horses & riders are ready

5. make barding so Ariel looks pretty
going to see how much our rug lady would charge to make barding... would be one less thing to worry about.

6. make garb I can ride in (DOH!)
I think I'm going to have to accept that I simply don't have the time to make the garb I would like... I think I'll just be wearing a t-tunic instead.

7. get used to riding in garb
not a problem if it's just a t-tunic

8. get Ariel used to being ridden in barding with me in garb (ok *this* might be the most difficult!!)
again shouldn't be a problem if it's just a t-tunic... barding isn't much different to her summer sheet that she runs around in outside so that should be ok.

so.... focusing on practicing the riding skills is the priority right now... off to the barn again tonight then!
I'm not sure how he managed it... I didn't think they'd let us... didn't think we had enough time... but Robert of Clan Gunn has convinced someone to allow us to have horses at Quad War!! Which means I need to:

1. get Ariel used to the idea of doing strange games (this may prove the most difficult!)
2. see if  [profile] neavecanada  has a horse she wants to/can take
3. see what we have in the way of transportation for our equine friends
4. make sure everyone who wants to ride has videos taken of them so we can send them off for authorization
5. make barding so Ariel looks pretty
6. make garb I can ride in (DOH!)
7. get used to riding in garb
8. get Ariel used to being ridden in barding with me in garb (ok *this* might be the most difficult!!)

You have no idea how excited I am about this... I have waited so long to be able to play with horses in the SCA... ever since my disapointment in find that the "Master of Stables" had nothing to do with horses!!
